Rescue Diver Course – Scuba Specialty

What You Will Learn

Have you been scuba diving for a while now? Maybe you just want to be a better buddy? Are you considering going pro? Then maybe the rescue diver Scuba Specialty is for you! An emergency can arise at any time, and the PADI Rescue diver course prepares you to handle diving emergencies.  You will learn how to:

  • Self rescue
  • Recognize and manage stress in other divers
  • Manage emergency situations and use emergency equipment
  • Rescue panicked divers
  • Rescue unresponsive divers

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 12 years old
  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or have a qualifying certification from another training organization)
  • Must have a current first aid and CPR certification completed in the last 2 years (Ask us about the Emergency First Response course if you do not meet this requirement)

Classroom/Pool

The classroom portion of this course is designed to help the diver learn the necessary skills to prevent, recognize, and manage a wide range of dive emergencies.  If student does not have a current first aid and CPR certification, a Emergency First Response course maybe completed in conjunction with this course.

Pool sessions are not required to be completed for certification.  However, if students wish to practice skills prior to arriving at the open water site, pool sessions can be arranged with the instructor.

Open Water Dives

There are a series of rescue skills that will be demonstrated over several dives.  Once individual skills are demonstrated, the diver will then complete 2 rescue scenarios where the diver combines multiple skills and techniques.  PADI requires that exercise development and scenario practice be done over at least 2 days.  The rescue skills that need to be demonstrated include:

  • Self rescue
  • Tired diver assistance
  • Panicked diver management
  • Responding from shore, boat, or dock
  • Managing a distressed diver underwater
  • Locating a missing diver
  • Surfacing an unresponsive diver
  • Managing an unresponsive diver at the surface
  • Exiting an unresponsive diver
  • First aid for pressure-related injuries

Gear you will use

The diver will use all of the basic scuba gear.  Students will also use various types of rescue equipment such as throw bags and medical equipment such as oxygen tanks.  Student will require the PADI Rescue Diver crewpak to complete this course.  It includes:

  • PADI’s Rescue Diver Manual
  • Accident Management Work Slate
  • Pocket mask
